Foreign trade question?

The united states is the 3rd largest exporter and 1st largest importer.. but almost everything in the us is made in china, taiwan and other places even by american companies such as microsoft.. if american companies manufacture things in other countries does that count as us exports or china exports. Because i dont understand how the us can be 3rd largest exporter yet nothing made in the us is sold here... do they make a lot of things here and just sell them to australia canada united kingdom and germany .. (those are our 4 countries that we export to the most)
