Why don't people use social networking sites correctly?

I spent quite a while trying to track people down or add people who i do not see very often and half the time people are playing mindless flash games or using it as a moaning tool or if there is a news item of specfic importance it's like a race for everyone to post a link up before the next person does to get more comments., Whatever happened to catching up with friends and organising events? Facebook is a good example of what I mean.
